CONDITION UPON RECEIPT
Binding: Both the upper and lower boards are dettached (Fig. 1a), and the leather has been lifted at the spine edge to facilitate a reback. The boards show a great deal of wear, especially at the edges. The millboad is exposed at the corners (Fig. 6). There is acid burn on the pastedown at the turn ins. The pastedown on the upper board at the spine edge has been partially lifted (Fig.2a). The leather at the spine has rotted away, and no grain layer is present, although the remnants of a leather label and gold tooling can be seen (Fig. 5a). The endbands are missing, but the sewing is otherwise intact.
Textblock: The front flyleaf is dettached, and both flyleaves have acid burn left by the turn-ins. There is a large fold-out map preceeding the title page (Fig.3a), which has been improperly folded, is torn at the point of attachment, and shows surface dirt. The remainer if the texblock is in overall good condition, although it is badly speckled throughout due to improper sizing of the paper (Fig.4). The fold out map between pages 96 and 97 is imporoperly folded, and the smaller map adjacent to it is torn at the point of attachment. Acid burn is present on many of the pages facing both color and black and white plates.
TREATMENT OBJECTIVE
To restore the binding to good working order, and to produce a saleable copy for the client, who is a both a collector and bookseller. After discussing several options with the client, it was decided that a new half leather, period style binding would be the best choice.
TREATMENT PROPOSAL
1)
Remove the original binding, spine, and endpapers and spine linings. The bookplate on the upper board will be saved at reattached at the client’s discretion.
2)
Surface clean the torn plates in the front matter and opposite pp. 96, and make necessary paper repairs with Japanese tissue.
3)
Hinge on new trade style made marbled endpapers with a cloth hinge.
4)
Sew on new endbands.
5)
Create a new half-leather period style trade binding using hand-dyed calfskin and marbled paper.
6)
Add a gold-tooled title piece to the spine.
TREATMENT PREFORMED
1)
The original binding, spine piece, spine lining, and endpapers were removed. The spine was cleaned with a methylcellulose poultice. Grooves in the spine made by sawing in the cords were in-filled with strands of new cord to create a smooth spine.
2)
Maps adjacent to the frontispiece and pp. 96 were surface cleaned with a soot sponge, and improper folds were humidified and flattened. Tears were repaired with Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste made with distilled water, buffered to pH 9 with calcium hydroxide.
3)
New endpapers constructed with Burga paper were hinged on over the spine with Japanese tissue and wheat paste. A spine lining of Japanese tissue was applied with wheat starch paste.
4)
New endbands with were sewn on, taking care to tie on as few times as possible to prevent unnecessary wear on the textblock. The endbands were constructed using a core of laminated alum-taw goatskin and vellum, and dyed Londonderry linen thread.
5)
The book was give a new tightback half leather binding in hand dyed calfskin and handmade marbled paper from Ateleir Aquilina’s Restauro Series. The calfskin was dyed with Sellaset dye to warm honey brown.
6)
A black calfskin label and gold tooling was applied.
